Favorite quote: “And now I sit around a lot, afraid to leave my room. I’ve fallen a long way down, Iain.”

summary from Goodreads
Jackie Patton has been rescued by the Theronai from her captivity and torture at the hands of the Synestryn, only to learn that she’s a potential match for the Theronai warriors who need a woman to literally save their lives.

Forced to choose, she unexpectedly selects Iain, a cold-hearted warrior who doesn’t want to be saved. Iain is convinced that it’s too late—that his soul is already as dead as his former betrothed, killed by the Synestryn. Still, he is the only man Jackie feels a measure of peace around and the only one she wants. But is Iain indeed beyond saving?

Ellie's thoughts:
Since being rescued by the Theronai Jackie Patton has been pushed to save one their men by bonding with him and aide them in their fight against the Synestryn, the same evil monsters who held her captive for two years. Jackie wants no part of the Theronai, their war or their men and just wants to go back to her normal, boring life she had before she was kidnapped. Desperate to get back to her old life Jackie chooses Iain the one warrior who doesn’t look at her with hope in his eyes and the one she hopes will let her leave without him.

Iain lost the one woman he loved and wanted to bond with centuries ago and with her death he also lost his soul. For years Iain has been pretending that his life tree is not yet bare and that he can still be saved so he can carry on his personal war with the Synestryn. When Jackie chooses him as her partner and bonds her life with his, Iain’s world is turned upside down and his mission in life changes. He is now determined to save Jackie by undoing their bond even if it means giving up his own life by doing so.

I absolutely loved this book and it has restored my utter devotion to continuing to read this series. I wasn’t a fan of the fifth book and I started to get nervous that the series was starting to go down hill but Dying Wish proved that Shannon K. Butcher knows what she’s doing and I just need to sit back and enjoy the ride. If you haven’t read the first five books in this series do so before starting Dying Wish or you will be extremely lost with all the different characters and plot lines.

Iain has been a favorite of mine for a while and I was so excited when I heard he was getting his own book. Jackie I wasn’t so sure about and it took a good hundred pages for me to start to warm up to her but by the end of the book I couldn’t picture anyone else with Iain. Characters like Iain are why I read Shannon K. Butcher books because she has a way of taking these men who are so emotionally damaged that it seems no one or thing could possibly save them from their pain. I get super invested in characters especially one’s like Iain who I just want to hug until everything is better (even though he would never allow that). There were a few times that I felt he was a little harsh with Jackie but at the same time there were times when Jackie was being whiny and selfish and needed a kick in the right direction.

There is a lot going on in this book and some really amazing things happen that set up new story lines and future books. I love everything that is happening in this series right now and I am on pins and needles waiting to see who’s book is next and what is going to happen to everyone. I love that we get to see a lot of past couples and see that things are not always so happily ever after even if you’re in love. There is so much that can happen in this world and I for one will be first in line to see where this war goes and if more of the Theronai can be saved.
